Another day at the register means another day at the phone.
Ring!
“Thank you for calling, how can I help you?” I said into the receiver.
A woman’s voice answered. “Yeah, I need you to tell me about this grill.”
I could tell she was outside; it was particularly windy that day. “Sure. Which grill is it?” Having worked in the Outdoor section for two years now, I felt confident I could help her.
“The one I’m looking at,” she said like it was obvious.
“…OK.” Thinking that I may not have been clear about the information I needed to help her, I tried again. “Is it a gas or charcoal grill?”
“That’s what I wanted to know. Which is it?”
“Ma’am I don’t know what you’re looking at. I’m not there.”
“I’m looking at a grill! Are you not listening? I need to know which kind is it!”
“OK.” I felt this was going to be a fun call, so I calmed down and tried again in hopes to rectify the situation. Maybe I didn’t understand her. “Well ma’am. If it is a charcoal grill then the inside will be empty except for a metal grate.”
“There are bars in it.”
“OK, great! Then it’s a gas grill.”
“What kind of gas does it take?”
“Probably propane, ma’am.”
“Probably? Why aren’t you sure?” she yelled back at me. “You’re useless!”
An unmistakable dial tone followed. She called back later to complain and I found out she was at a different business altogether.
